Sweepstakes Winnings and Taxes: What US Winners Should Know

IRS reporting, Form 1099-MISC thresholds, state tax nuances, and why operators collect W-9 information before shipping high-value prizes.

Prizes feel like gifts. The IRS often classifies them as taxable income. Planning ahead prevents the shock of a great win followed by a large tax bill.

When operators issue tax forms

For US winners, prizes with fair market value at or above IRS reporting thresholds typically trigger W-9 collection and may result in Form 1099-MISC (or other applicable forms) for the tax year of the win.

Cash vs travel valuation

Cash is straightforward. Travel packages use the ARV stated in the Official Rules, which is why Gaviom publishes specs and total value on each prize page. Winners who elect cash alternatives simplify reporting but still owe tax on the amount received.
